A young woman was restrained, force-fed and injected with cosmetics in a high street shop window as part of a hard-hitting protest against animal testing.

Jacqueline Traide was tortured in front of hundreds of horrified shoppers in a bid to raise awareness and end the practise.

The 24-year-old endured 10 hours of experiments, which included having her hair shaved and irritants squirted in her eyes, as part of a worldwide campaign by Lush Cosmetics and The Humane Society.

The disturbing stunt took place in Lush’s Regent Street store, one of the UK’s busiest shopping streets.

Jacqueline appeared genuinely terrified as she was pinned down on a bench and had her mouth stretched open with two metal hooks while a man in a white coat force-fed her until she choked and gagged.

The artist was also injected with numerous needles, had her skin braised and lotions and creams smeared across her face.

Passers-by were gobsmacked to see Jacqueline, a social sculpture student at Oxford Brookes University, forced to have a section of her head shaved.

The gruesome spectacle aimed to highlight the cruelty inflicted on animals during cosmetic laboratory tests and raise awareness that animal testing is still a common practise.

The Humane Society International and Lush Cosmetics have joined forces to launch the largest-ever global campaign to end animal testing for cosmetics.

The campaign, launched to coincide with World Week for Animals in Laboratories, is being rolled out simultaneously in over 700 Lush Ltd shops across forty-seven countries including the United States, Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Russia.

Lush campaign manager Tamsin Omond said: “The ironic thing is that if it was a beagle in the window and we were doing all these things to it, we’d have the police and RSPCA here in minutes.

“But somewhere in the world, this kind of thing is happening to an animal every few seconds on average.

“The difference is, it’s normally hidden. We need to remind people it is still going on.”

I want to confess the secret to finding a Sam-hearted friend! To the lonely Frodos out there, I have a hunch that the reason you’re still without your Sam is because you’re undervaluing yourself and your beautiful role in the relationship. Simply because Sam was more openly demonstrative in his love does not mean he held them together all by himself. In fact, it was inferably Frodo who sparked their beginnings. Your Sam is likely right under your nose – and you might even be looking down your nose at them. Sams aren’t ‘somebodies’; they’re probably unpopular, quirky, awkward, and evidently dull. Notice that person, like Frodo did, and treat them with respect despite their status. Whenever your Sam acts ridiculous and embarrassing (as is inevitable for a Sam!), don’t roll your eyes and deride them; Frodo never willingly ridiculed Sam, and his words toward him were soothing and affectionate, even when other people found it easy to cut him down. Build your Sam up, make them your equal. Be gentle, even if your Sam doesn’t look like they deserve or need it – they are truly tender. They tend to be doormats in ways, so reaffirm their worth. Accept their service and let yourself be weak to their persistence. Teach them, and you may see simple brilliance and depth beyond their surface. Love your Sam so completely despite their flaws and drab personality/appearance that they mistake you for being a little blind. Let them rescue you, even if you don’t want to be a burden … because you’re never a burden to your Sam. Your Sam will be so amazed that you care for them in their lowliness that they will pour eternal, unwavering love and loyalty to the point of death upon you.

Don’t forget that Frodo was never passive in loving Sam; he was just a little quieter, and that quiet love was just as indispensable.

    With love,

A lonely, boring Sam who wonders if one day they will be tolerated, and their love accepted

Thranduil is my favourite elf character out of all the films so far including Lotr and the two Hobbit movies. Not only is he sinfully attractive, but he’s extremely complex and a very intriguing character. Lee Pace is amazing in his portrayal of him and he’s so well written that in his short amount of screen time, he’s had more character development than most the rest of the cast.

I’m simultaneously turned on and terrified by Thranduil. Well done, Lee Pace.

I was in an exam yesterday and I was really struggling, I felt like bursting into tears. When I was just about to give up, I just imagined Sam and Frodo sitting next to me, and Frodo saying “I took the ring to Mordor and got through the most difficult times, and you can do this exam.” I got through the exam with a smile on my face and left with my head up high.
